What is happiness and why do we all want it so much?
Everyone will have their own definitions of what happiness is. What brings you joy, might not bring others joy.
But YOUR joy is what is important – more important than anything else.
Some might choose to define happiness by examining what it is not. Happiness is not, for example, misery and sadness. In fact, it is the complete opposite.
And this is why we all want it so much.
Finding happiness at the end of the rainbow is not so easy if you first of all don’t define what happiness is to you. Once you have settled on your definition, you can then take control of your life and do everything that is in your power to attain bliss.
Here are 10 happiness tips that will improve your life immeasurably:
Get More Sleep
A few years ago, I was working all the hours God could send me. I was no longer a workaholic – I was a lunatic who was obsessed with her work.
Because I worked so many hours, I found it hard to switch off. I started resenting sleep because it ate into my time, time that I could be using productively.
I started telling people that sleep is for the weak
As such, I barely got more than four hours of sleep per night.
I thought this was okay for a while, until it eventually started affecting my everyday life. I become irritable and frustrated. I lost focus and started snapping at my colleagues.
My productivity levels diminished and I was a shadow of what I once was. I was on edge at all times, nervous and deeply unhappy.
Sleep is important. It refreshes your mind and body and prepares you mentally and physically for the next day.
How great does it feel to wake up after a good night’s sleep? You feel so invigorated and ready to seize the day.
Sleep more and you’ll feel happier.
Move Closer To Work
Then I realised that this wasn’t funny anymore. I didn’t want my life to be like that!
The morning commute to work can put anyone in a bad mood. All that congestion, noise and road rage can kill your spirit and make you feel deeply unhappy.
Especially when you know you’ve got to go through it all again at the end of the day!
So why not make your life easier by moving closer to work?
Even better, why not find a new job that means you can work from home?
Listen To Music In The Morning
The way you start each day in the morning sets the tone for how the rest of your day will go.
A great way of starting each day positively is by listening to your favourite, most upbeat music.
Too much sun exposure can cause health problems, but the right amount of sunlight can boost your mood levels significantly.
Sunlight and darkness are well known for their ability to trigger the release of hormones in the human brain.
Whereas darkness can cue the release of hormones that make us feel sleepy, sunlight can trigger an abundance of a happy hormone called serotonin.
If you’ve got a job that keeps you indoors for 8-12 hours per day, it’s important that you make proper use of the breaks you’re offered. Don’t use them to finish off the odd job; instead, get outside, get some vitamin D and fresh air.
Surround Yourself With Happy People
Sometimes, our actions and thoughts reflect those who we spend most of our time with. If your friends are negative people, you might need to find some new mates who have joie de vivre and want to life life to its fullest.
“Practice kindness all day to everybody and you’ll realise that you’re already in heaven now.”
It might seem strange to suggest that the key to making YOU feel happier is by helping OTHERS. But it’s true.
When we help others, we feel positive. We feel good about ourselves and the fact that we’re spreading positivity in the world.
A few years back when I was feeling really blue, I used to look at myself in the mirror (whenever I could bear to) and I’d scowl. I knew I looked hideous and I had no reason to smile.
But then I realised that all this scowling was just making me feel bad.
My grandmother then gave me a great piece of advice to make everything in the world seem so much better: Smile more.
It was so simple that I thought it was stupid. I dismissed it as an old wives’ tale.
One day, I tried it. In secret, of course.
And you know what? It worked.
Smiling – whether to yourself or strangers – instantly lifts your mood and makes you feel better about the world and your place in it. You suddenly feel positive and as though no obstacle is too big.
And if it is, so what!
Wake Up Earlier
Waking up earlier has so many benefits:
You get to witness the intoxicating joy of a sunrise.
You get to experience the peace and tranquility of quiet streets.
You get to see way the sweet morning dew looks on flowers.
The fact that you get to make a head start on your projects and don’t get frustrated when the clock ticks down as the day goes on.
De-Clutter Your Life
When you’ve got a to-list longer than your house, it can be really easy to get stressed and exhausted. When you think about what you’ve still got to do, you just want to sleep forever.
You can’t take this anymore.
So what do you do? You de-clutter your life, girl!
You make a list of everything in your life that you need to do and then you prioritise.
Put a letter next to each item on your list ranging from A to C, A being the most important and C being the least important.
Then, erase all those C items.
Then, take a closer look at your B items. Can you cut any of these out of your life, too?
Be Grateful For What You Have
So many of us spend a lot of our time thinking about what we could have.
We compare our lives to our friends on social media and get upset when we decide their life is so much better.
Think about the people who are worse off than you and comparing their lives to yours.
Focus on the good things you do have. Be grateful and appreciative of your extraordinary life.
