Manchester United are said to be happy to offload Memphis Depay to Southampton in order to get a headstart in the race for Saints forward Sadio Mane.

United were linked with a move for the 24-year-old Senegal international over the winter, and appear to be keen to make another attempt to bolster their forward line with the highly-rated attacker.

The Daily Star claim that Saints boss Ronald Koeman is a long-term admirer of Memphis, and even tried to sign the flying winger before Old Trafford came calling last summer. However, he seems to be drifting further and further out of Louis van Gaal’s thoughts, and could be open to a move to a team where he would get regular football.

The Dutchman has made just 15 Premier League starts since his £25m summer move from PSV Eindhoven, more often starting on the bench after Van Gaal dropped him earlier in the season. A series of disappointing performances have seen the 22-year-old branded a flop by a number of fans and the media, and a move to a less pressurised environment could help him rediscover his form.

Mane has struggled for form in places himself this season, contributing just two assists and no goals in 19 Premier League games between the end of November and mid-March – where he came flying back into form with a brace against Liverpool in a dramatic 3-2 win.

The Senegalese forward is rated at around £30m but if both parties decide that they’re keen on the other’s player, it’s more likely that some kind of swap deal could be arranged over the summer.
