HALF-TIME! Yeray’s strike signalled the end of the first half at the Bernabeu, which means that the scoreline ends the first 45 minutes at 3-1. Goals from Mariano Diaz and James opened up the gap, with the Leonesa midfielder rattling home what could be a consolation goal for the underdogs.
45’Yeray González Luis
45′ GOOOOOOOOAL! YERAY MAKES IT 3-1! The striker takes aim from the edge of the penalty area, after being teed up by a deflection. The midfielder blasts home a fantastic shot, which Casilla gets nowhere near! The away fans go wild.
44′ Leonesa break down the left-hand side through Suarez, but Carvajal tracks back to make a timely tackle on essentially his own byline. The underdogs are trying to scamper forward and pile bodies forward on the counter, but they haven’t quite found their cutting edge yet.
42′Mariano Díaz Mejía
42′ GOOOOOOOOAL! WONDERFUL FINISH FROM MARIANO! The Dominican striker scampers into the box and takes the ball down on his chest, before blasting an unstoppable effort into the top-right corner. That is quite a hit.
41′ Diaz goes down on the edge of the penalty area, claiming for a free-kick, but the referee isn’t interested at all – which is the same opinion he has moments later when Isco goes to ground in a similar area. Only five minutes remain in the first half, with Zidane’s men looking for another goal.
39′ The home side race forward on the break, with Diaz fed into the area. The Dominican striker shakes off one challenge and gets into the box, but then hammers a shot a long way wide of the near post. That was a good half-chance for the young striker. Moments later, he gets into the area again, but Leandro comes out to make a near-post stop.
37′ Leonesa manage to break through the heart of the Real Madrid back four, but Nacho covers across to mop up the scraps. The hosts then break up the other end and Isco takes aim from the edge of the box, but the ex-Malaga midfielder bends a shot shy of the top left-hand corner.
35′ Tejero gets down the left-hand side and tries to bend in a cross, but Leonesa clear, with Nacho then able to mop up the scraps as Benja looks to get in behind on the counter. Real Madrid try to break down the right-hand side at pace, but Odegaard can only drive to the byline and cut back a cross to a defender.
33′ Real Madrid are moving the ball at pace, with the home side managing to get down the right-hand side quite regularly. Carvajal has been a constant outlet down the right-hand side. Slightly over 10 minutes remain in the first half, with Leonesa trying to achieve damage limitation between now and the break.
32’Iván Garrido González
32′ Garrido gets the second yellow card of the evening.
31’Carlos Henrique Casimiro
31′ Real Madrid have been guilty of a few fouls in the middle of the park, with the referee eventually deciding that a tackle from Casemiro is worthy of a booking. A few cynical challenges have added up.
29′ Leonesa break down the left-hand side, with play eventually worked straight out to the opposite flank. A cross from the right byline is clipped towards the near post, with Benja only able to direct a firm header wide of the upright. Casilla had his angles easily covered.
27′ James takes a shot from just inside the penalty area, but checks back onto his left foot and drills a shot straight at Leandro. That was nearly 3-0, which would have probably killed off Leonesa’s desire to play for pride. The hosts are pushing on and dominating possession, with the underdogs unable to string more than three passes together.
25′ Real Madrid will be feeling very confident indeed, after netting that second goal. Every strike will give their young players further license to play without fear and express themselves. At this rate, we could definitely see Zidane’s son Enzo getting a run-out in the second half.
23′James David Rodríguez Rubio
23′ GOOOOOAL! JAMES MAKES IT 2-0! The hosts retain possession comfortably, before working the ball out to the right-hand side. Carvajal bends in a cross from the flank, which finds James scampering into the box. The Colombia international thumps home a great near-post header after getting across his man well.
21′ Real Madrid wins themselves a corner on the right-hand side, but neither Casemiro nor Nacho can turn home a close-range finish after Leonesa fail to clear. The opening 20 minutes haven’t really seen too many clear-cut chances for the hosts, but their fans are continuing to make plenty of noise. Casemiro tries to shoot from around the half-way line, but the ball sails over Leandro’s bar.
19′ James opens play out to the right-hand side, but Carvajal is unable to keep the ball in play and gives away a goal-kick. Real Madrid are starting to control proceedings again, with the hosts clearly targetting a second goal to completely demoralise Leonesa.
17′ Carvajal goes on a driving run down the right-hand side and then drifts inside, exchanging a one-two with Asensio. The right-back then unselfishly squares a pass to Mariano Diaz, who slots home his second of the night, but the Dominican striker is denied by the offside flag. That was a lovely move, but the linesman made the right decision.
15′ Odegaard escapes down the right, but then sends a pass straight out of play ahead of Carvajal – the two aren’t quite on the same wavelength yet. It might take a bit of time for this Real Madrid side to build up an understanding, as this is really a team of fringe players, those returning from injury, and youngsters.
13′ James tries to clip a cross into the box from the left-hand side, but Bastos is happy to chest a pass back to his goalkeeper. The away side then try to stroke the ball around a little and work their way into this contest, after the disappointment of conceding the early goal, but Real Madrid are compressing the midfield third well.
11′ Tejero drives down the left-hand side and gets to the byline, but a sliding tackle prevents the youngster from cutting back a cross from the same position from which Asensio provided the first assist of the night. Leonesa respond with their own attack down the right, as Gallar is the target of a long, sweeping pass from Morgado, but the defender’s ball is too heavy for his winger to catch.
9′ Victor Diaz makes a good clearance, after Carvajal looked to whip in a cross from the right, with Real Madrid camped in opposition territory at the moment. The home fans are making plenty of noise, and they are urging their players on further – they’re not happy with 1-0! Odegaard skips into the box, before feeding Carvajal, but a delivery from the latter is cleared.
7′ The away side are released down the right-hand side, with Orti racing down the flank, but Pepe covers across to defuse the situation. Real Madrid are looking very comfortable, but Leonesa are looking to be extremely direct when they do get hold of the ball – which could cause problems.
5′ The home side are stroking the ball around and getting a feel for possession, with a few players needing to get some football under their belts before the weekend. James has featured sporadically recently, while Casemiro has been a long-term injury absentee. Leonesa try to break down the left through Yeray, but Odegaard tracks back to make a good tackle on the edge of his own area.
3′ Well, that will be a blow for Leonesa. The away side try to respond immediately, but a clipped pass into the box from the left-hand side is claimed by Casilla ahead of Benja. The first thing their coach will have said is to keep things tight in the early minutes, and they’ve not even managed to last the first minute without gifting Real Madrid the opener.
1’Mariano Díaz Mejía
1′ GGOOOOOOOOOOAL! MARIANO DIAZ MAKES IT 1-0! The young forward is picked out by a cross from the left byline, and passes home within the first 30 seconds. Too easy for the hosts.
1′ We are underway in the first half! Zidane has given a lot of players the chance to prove themselves tonight, but they’re facing a team who have been in extremely good form over the course of this campaign. Leonesa will want to cause an upset at the Bernabeu!
Leonesa substitutes: Martinez, Abdulsalam, Palatsi, Zuiverloon, Moreno.
