The Nigerian Labour Congress, (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, (TUC) are set to embark on a strike action tomorrow despite a restraining order by the National Industrial Court, (NIC), sitting at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the resolution of the union at its National Executive Council, NEC meeting held today, the strike action is expected to take effect from 12 midnight today.

It would be recalled that the Labour Unions had on Saturday during an emergency meeting, issued a communiqué vowing to embark on a nationwide industrial action should the Federal Government refuse to reverse the sudden hike in the price of fuel.

With this, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN, dragged NLC to the Industrial Court, seeking an order of the court restraining the congress from proceeding with the planned strike on the ground that the strike would paralyze the nation’s economy.

Howbeit, in a ruling today, the NIC President, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, restrained the labour unions from going on strike, pending the determination of a suit the Federal Government brought before it.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Adejumo further ordered all the parties to maintain status quo until the legal dispute is settled.

However, with the latest development, at the Union’s National Executive Council, NEC meeting held today, the strike action will proceed as planned according to a Source who spoke to Vanguard.

“Our decision not to suspend the strike was further fuelled by today’s injunction by the Industrial Court, restraining us from proceeding on the strike expected to begin tomorrow,” the Source told Vanguard.

He furthered that the two bodies were still studying development and may not honour the meeting expected with the government at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation this evening.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the NLC and the TUC were yet to turn up for continuation of the meeting which was adjourned earlier as at press time.
